Fed Up With School Lunches?

Apron Goddesses, have you seen this site?

Fed Up: School Lunch Project (By a Teacher who is eating school lunch just like the kids every day in 2010)

If not you should. I knew some school lunch programs were in sad shape and recent efforts in some schools have resulted in improvements to the nutrition and calorie content of kids lunches. BUT there is a long way to go!

If you want a blow by blow account of an average school lunch program check out this site Fed Up: School Lunch Project. It is eye opening.

This teacher's account is matter of fact and shows a photo of the lunch daily. She is also providing other discussions about recess in school too. It's a good site to check out for a "reference" check on your own school lunch program.

We are lucky at our school to have Revolution Foods as the provider of our school lunch program. I love their motto "Make ever bite matter!" We bake cookies and the like at our home but they are given judiciously and I make sure that their "treat" is just that. A treat. And that it does not comprise a large proportion of my kids food. Revolution Foods takes it even further and does not provide any "treats" in the lunch box.

I order my son one lunch per week from their menu and we pack his lunch the other days of the week. The lunches are not packed with extra calories, are tasty and healthy. It's a good thing!

It is so hard to teach a balanced approach to eating in kids. What is healthy? What is a treat? How much treat is OK? I don't think you should eliminate fun snacks in a diet but teach the kids to moderate themselves at an early age....

How is your lunch program? And are you happy with it?

I always packed my sons a good healthy lunch and now that they are grown and on their own, I do the same for their dad. He gets a wonderful sack lunch everyday and he loves. It also save us loads of money...approx $190.00 a month!

I home school The Boy but thinking back on the food I ate in the school lunch room....eewww...insert shudder...yuck! Knowing what I know now about nutrition and his food allergies there is no way I would let him eat that stuff! I would be packing his lunch.

I am excited to check out this site.
Our little princess doesn't attend school until this Fall and I am not sure how the lunches are here in our school systems. If they ar eanything like when I was in school they are crappy.
I do remember when she went to a daycare for a while and they had school lunches there that consisted of hotdogs (gross) and chicken nuggets (gross) and nothin I wanted my baby to eat. I may be packing lunches for her for the next 14 years. LOL

For most of the time in the last thirteen years that I have had children in the school system here, there has not been a lunch programme. Last year, No. 4's school introduced the "Lunch Lady" in the school. After looking at the menu, No. 4 decided that he was not interested and it did not look that healthy! While the menu was not too bad it seemed to favour healthier versions of typical fast food and was focused on being nut-free. I have food allergies (not nut) and get frustrated by how in efforts to avoid nuts they emphasize other proteins like egg and fish that I cannot have in my house. It is getting increasingly difficult to send 'acceptable' choices to school.

Thanks for drawing my attention to the 'Fed-up: school lunch programme' it is really eye-opening. It is my blog anniversary so I have a give away including a cookbook and some vintage sparkle.

I don't have kids...well human kids anyway.
But I know the schools in Missoula started a farm to school program last year that added lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to the school lunches. It was very well received.

That is cool! I remember school lunches...yech! Just picked up James kindergarten enrollment forms, so we will have to see what the cafeteria serves these days. Packing is probably going to be our best option, though. It is cheaper.

I LOVED school lunch when I was a kid. Mostly because of the dessert :o)

My kids go to a public charter school and so we don't have a lunch program. Sometimes I have a hard time coming up with fresh ideas for lunches. Sandwiches get really boring day after day. This looks like a cool thing!
