History of the Poodle Skirt a Guest Blog

Good Morning Apron Goddesses!
Happy Saturday to you!

Today is the last day to sign up for the giveaway from Aprons Americana. Click here to enter before 12 midnight.

I have the honor of introducing a special guest blogger today. Cynthia, owner of The Cupcake Provocateur, has provided this lil' report for us to enjoy on the history of the Poodle Skirt. We might see some more from her in the future seeing as she is an expert in retro fashions and vintage aprons. On that note, I'm going to let her take it away...

Ever wonder what what the poodle skirt represents? Rock & Roll Baby!!!!!!! Rumor has it Poodle skirts were invented to emphasize the popular dance moves of the day. What better outfit to wear while doing the Lindy hop and Jitter Bug but a poodle skirt?

Poodle skirts were perfect for dancing at the local sock hops while listening to your favorite Elvis songs twirling around till the sun came up or at least till curfew!

If you were a teeny bopper in the 1950’s you probably wore a poodle skirt with your favorite emblem on it....perhaps a record with music notes, saddle shoes or the ever popular poodle and leash!

Why is the poodle the most popular emblem you ask?......I heard through the grape vine that the poodle and leash meant you were going steady with a specialfella and the leash meant you were tied down so to speak. If you sported one without a leash meant you were playing the field? Interesting huh!

Poodle skirts were and still are a representation of expression! When you walked out of your house with your hair in a high pony tail, saddle shoes on your feet, and blowing bubbles with your favorite bubble gum, you were showing everyone your personal style!

That is why I am happy be a part of The Apron Goddesses giveaway next month! One lucky winner will receive their very own Cupcake Provocateur Poodle Skirt Apron! Show your Kitch’n style with this cute little number!

Welcome Cynthia! We are glad to have you!

Just Horsing Around with Aprons Americana

I don't usually make it a habit to throw myself into the daily spotlight at TAG, but this week will be a notable exception. You must forgive this indulgence, since it will not happen again for a long time. Of that I can assure you.

I happened to receive a little white package in the mail today. Turns out it was a special surprise from Aprons Americana!!! That horse print I was oogling over on Monday was real and in my very own hands. I simply did what every normal woman does when she gets something new... I put it on.

Now this apron is one I can cover in filth and never feel guilty. It's not one of those prissy primadonna aprons for real girly-girls, but it's not supposed to be. These are get down and dirty with no holds barred aprons.

Aprons Americana is not selling those sexy little numbers you wear to peak your husbands interest... These are functional aprons for your everyday work! I really would not wear my pink floral apron out to the barn. What would the horses think?

When I have to wear white clothes for horse shows, I will put this apron on in between rides. Yes, the idiots who run the dressage competitions mandate buttoned white shirts with stock ties and sparkling white breeches. You are privileged to wear a dark colored jacket over all of that. Their kindness knows no bounds...

So the giveaway for Aprons Americana ends on Saturday at midnight. Be sure to get your entry in before the deadline! Go choose your favorite pattern and leave me a comment here. If your lucky number comes up in the random drawing you win the apron fabric pattern of your choice.

And here is a parting picture of the torturous clothing we must wear for dressage shows... Really, I hate the "uniform." It looks tidy but I am always sweating my butt off in that dreadful jacket.

By the way, my horses have been standing around doing nothing for days now since it been raining and raining in California. I will be happy to get back to work with them again. Meanwhile, I will wear my apron and wait out the storms!

Your Hostess Shows off in Apron Goddess Style

Win an apron in your favorite fabric pattern from Aprons Americana this week here!

Greetings and welcome to all Apron Goddesses visiting today! I wanted to take a moment and show one of my latest apron acquisitions from Time and Again, which by the way, will be a featured sponsor in the weeks ahead. I was immediately struck with the sheer volume of whimsical prints at this on line store for both adult and children's aprons.

I ordered this cute pink floral print since I am really turning into a "pink-a-holic." Who'd have guessed. It even came with a removable flower that I had to give to my daughter Ella.

Over the past few weeks I have figured out that I can use my aprons as "half's" or "full's" depending my whim of the day. I love that with a long tie I can simply wrap it around and make a bow in the front.

Or alternately, I can flip the bodice portion over my neck and have the full coverage that some meal preparations truly require.

So now that you know this trick you too can be an apron fashion chameleon with the flip of some fabric!

Finally, I want to send an all points bulletin to all those ladies who allegedly said THEY were going to send in some pictures for show and tell at TAG. Just remember, you can apply the extra credit to which ever future apron giveaway you wish. I keep a detailed log book just so you know!

Bye for now Apron Addicts!

Apron Goddess and Seamstress Terri

Win an apron in your favorite fabric pattern from Aprons Americana this week!
Enter to win
here.

Apron Goddess Terri from Clay Hill Farm and her Jr. Apron Goddess niece Ashley, are exhibiting their hand made aprons! Terri was also winer of the Vintage Apron Pattern Book, by June Bartos last week. Now she can really get to sewing some antique styled aprons in modern fabrics.

Terri wrote on her blog about her day before she knew she won the pattern book, "So I was beat. I came home and changed into PJ's and went to bed. The Princess (niece) wanted to come visit and normally I am always up for Princess time, but last night I just couldn't manage one more thing, so I asked her dad to tell her that we needed to postpone it. She is a sweet and sensible Princess, though, so I am sure she understands.

Then I talked to Hannah's mom, who knew I'd been stuck in the hospital all day. She told me I needed to take a look at The Apron Goddesses, and I knew immediately what that meant! And I've nattered on for a page and a half just to explain the lift that news gave me - to be so exhausted and feel so beat and then to get good news. I can't even describe how it felt, but I'll bet you can picture it!

I am so excited about winning it! I'll get the book, and I'll review it here, and I'll make a couple of aprons, and if one of them turns out well perhaps I'll have a vintage apron giveaway! Won't that be fun?"

But to get back to her current aprons! Next, Terri revealed, "The half-apron is adapted from a tutorial at Diamonds, Fur and Laundry.

I am so loving the green background and the brown polka dots on this apron. Also the tie at the waist in front is a pretty detail!

Terri indicated, "The Princess is wearing a half-apron based on the above tutorial (just cut in, well, half!) and the rest of her ensemble consists of a bag made from a tutorial at Lazy Girl Designs."

I think this jungle theme is way cute! And the matching ensemble is adorable! I'm thinking she's a lucky girl to have such a fun aunt.

Terri further explained that she, "Made a simple headband from a fabric tube with the ends stitched closed. This (apron) used exactly a yard of fabric, plus a couple of strips of brown fabric leftover from my small apron."

Terri says she, "...just eyeballed and put it together. (Pictured left) I wish I'd made a wider skirt on that one for more fullness."

As an innocent bystander I think it came out just fine!

Thanks so much for sharing your photos with us today Terri! And we will be looking out for you in the near future with some vintage styles with a new twist.

Awesome...An Apron Giveaway from Bitchen Boutique

Welcome TAG to the new week and a "totally gnarly" apron giveaway from Aprons Americana a subdivision of Bitchen Boutique! (Sorry I could not help the valley girl reference!)

Owner, Lisa was inspired to make a line of "Cobbler Style" aprons after falling in love with the fun prints and functionality of the aprons she found at estate sales. With help from her sister Eleni on a name and logo, Lisa launched her apron business and has them manufactured in Manhattan by fabulous people in the Garment District.

You can pick your own pattern from the selection at Aprons Americana and win it this week by entering below!

This apron picture to the left is of the darling Eleni's Roses fabric. It fully covers your front and ties neatly in the front or back. You can tackle ANYTHING in this apron without fear of messing your clothes. Or use the two apron pockets for your ipod, phone, tissue, or as a place to put veggies from your garden.

I know there are many gardening TAG ladies out there who could use this!!!!

The back of a cobbler aprons look like this (to the right). The aprons can either tie in the front or back.

Lisa offers 35 different beautiful patterns to chose from at Aprons Americana which all retail at $39.99 each. In addition, she has 24 patterns on clearance for $19.99 which is 50% their normal cost. Additionally, you can find 4 plus size patterns as well. So basically, there is something for everybody here!

Aprons Americana takes pride that each apron is fully edged in almost 11 yards of bias tape. These aprons are high quality and very durable.

Lisa says, "Sometimes I wear them grocery shopping and it's fun, fun, fun to talk to people about them!"

I am especially fond of this pattern since I have horses...maybe I could get this one for a cover up at horse shows!

So, down to business. You could enter the giveaway for yourself or even enter to win and gift it to a loved one, that is if you can part with it!

First, visit Aprons Americana and find the pattern you would like to win and come back to leave a comment about it. Please remember to leave an email address if you do not have a blog site.
